As many of you know, we use a lot of our own staff members and writers as actors in sketches on the show. This means that pretty much anyone can be on the show at any time; if the writers and the casting dept think that you'd be a good fit for a part, you're called up from the ranks to appear on the show!
Normally, the way this happens is this: You are either called by the casting folks (Ric & Emily) or a writer calls you up and asks if you've seen the script (which, because I don't read the script, is always a no). The latter is what happened to me today: Michael Gordon, the writer of the piece, called me up, asked me some cryptic questions, and then came into my office while I read the script and saw that I was in the bit! He asked if that was cool and everything - which of course it was - and then he left and went down to rehearsal.
During rehearsal, our Stage Manager Steve Hollander paged me over the office intercom (using a variety of, ahem, nicknames), so I scurried down to the studio. When I got there, Steve came over and asked if I had seen the script, which I had, then he told me to have a seat in the audience with all the interns and other staff folks... Conan rehearsed a couple of bits; then, with a "don't screw this one up", Hollander called me over to the performance area.
